Elmiron Lawsuit

The drug Elmiron® (pentosan polysulfate sodium) is currently part of a recent lawsuit that highlights a link between the drug and several vision issues. What Is Elmiron?

Elmiron is an FDA approved oral medication prescribed to treat bladder pain and discomfort associated with interstitial cystitis (IC). Also known as pentosan polysulfate sodium (PPS), the drug creates a thin layer inside of a patient’s bladder to protect it from irritating and harmful substances commonly found in urine.

Elmiron Side Effects

Recent studies have investigated Elmiron and associated eye damage. The have found that Elmiron may be linked to macular degeneration, pigmentary maculopathy, and retinal maculopathy. Additional side effects from taking Elmiron may include the following:

• Blurred or distorted vision
• Eye pain
• Vision loss
• Skin rash
• Sleep disorders
• Headaches
• Diarrhea
• Bruising
• Alopecia

Can Elmiron Cause Blindness?

In several studies, clinical researchers have found a link between the use of Elmiron and macular degeneration, which is a condition that over time can lead to permanent vision loss. A 2019 study of 91 Elmiron patients who had taken the medication for over 15 years showcased that 22 patients had clear indications of retinal damage associated with macular degeneration.
